Smart Phones / Cell Phones - How To and Discussion ...
(I think this would be a good thing to add to our forum)

I'll start ... :hiwave:
I had a small "flip phone" TracFone® for about 3 years or so.
I liked it and it did what I needed for very little money.
There were a few things that it lacked that I thought would be nice though.
It didn't have WiFi. (although it did have Blue Tooth)
The keyboard entry was difficult to use and cumbersome too. (no touch screen)
The USB port only allowed for charging and not file transferring.
Pictures and especially movies were pretty darn small (low pixels) :(

Then my wife ordered me another TracFone® Phone - A "Smart Phone" :D
She ordered for me an LG Sunset 4G LTE TracFone® Smartphone (L33L) | LG USA
See here: http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-L33L-sunset-lte
I LOVE it! :cheesy:
This puppy does what I need and a lot more and is very efficient in doing what it does!
FYI - Greylox also bought 3 of these for his wife and he and his daughter too!
We both Love them, and with TracFone® they are so cheap to use!!!
(stay tuned - more to come) ...

Well, I bought my first smartphone just 3 months ago and the difference with old-generation mobile phones is remarkable, they're really two different universes.
Anyway I've been using Nokia phones for more than 15 years (3310 and 2720 fold) and I never had a problem: life was simpler but also better.
These new mobile phones have a lot of features (huge address books, email, maps, music, microSD cards, etc) but, honestly, there's also a lot of ********. After removing all that useless crap (social media, skype and whatsapp) my phone seems now a pretty serious machine to work with.

Pretty much my history with phones is like Mr.P's... Nokia die hard all around from a 3310 (which I gave to my grandpa later, still uses it TO THIS DAY FOR OVER 15 YEARS) to a 3100 (lost it) to a 6030 (finally broke after 5 years of usage lol)... slight detour with a Sony Ericcson i530 (died pretty quick) to a Nokia N73 (3 years, middle button broke and screen broke) and now a Samsung Galaxy S3, though I am planning on buying a new one right now, as this one is on it's last leg of sorts :P using it for I think 1-2 years now.

Deep cover GEcko!

I still use my Nokia 5100 as a "phone" and only use my smart phone as a hand held computer.
Having to wait for the phone to not be busy before it will respond to me swiping is intolerable, and is what happens to them all, as they become bloated with everything trying to be "helpful" by auto launching in the background.

Old phones do not risk being hijacked by advert fuelled crudware.
Old phones do not leak as much of your private life.
Old phones do not need constant security fixes.
Old phones only contain software made by professionals

Step 1 of having an Android device
Check which version of the OS you have, and make sure the phone is set to receive updates.
Some new phones come more raw and can be updated directly from Google. If you rely on your phone manufacturer for updates there is a chance they may push them, but if you rely on the phone network provider (phone will be full of their crud) then you have no hope of ever getting updates.
In all cases, check to see if the PC software has the ability to update/flash your phone with newer ROM images.

Step 2
Install a vulnerability scanner and test the phone and installed apps for known problems before you fill it with more apps.
Do regular scans to find problems with new apps.

Step 3
Pick and Antivirus and become familiar with how it works (they are not the same as PC ones).
Bitdefender seems to be consistently rated as the best for mobiles.

Step 4
Tracker and malvertising blocking
For phones without ROOT access you will need to use apps that either use a proxy or VPN.
Devices with ROOT access can use a normal HOSTS file blocklist.

Step 5
Pick a VPN service and use it whenever you are on a public open wifi.
Very important, because your phone will spam all your login details and cookies over networks you do not control.

Step 6
Try not to worry, but do actually worry.

Disable Bluetooth and Near Field Communication (NFC) when you are not using it.
Privacy issues can also be highlighted by using advert detector and addon detector apps.
Guess who recently put together a handy collection of tools :shhh:
https://drflay.wordpress.com/2017/03/30 ... e-devices/

As for apps worth playing with;
OpenCamera is the best camera app for getting good pictures.

Trillian can replace the use of both Google and FB chat in 1 more convenient app (supports other networks also)

Opera browser is much faster than chrome and firefox, and has the ability to recompress media data so that pictures and video cost less to download and are usually quicker to view. This really helps with badly made sites.

Firefox supports many of the extensions that are available for the full version. This is handy for extra security features or cool features from the full browsers.

CCleaner is also available for android, but personally I have used better cleanup apps that find more stuff.

Have a look though my other collection. It is sort of grouped. Security stuff at the top, and the playthings further down
