Great WWII Movies! (or other?)
Let us post and Discuss them here :salute:

One I really like is: "They Were Expendable"
It is based on a true life experience in a book written I believe in 1942 or 1943
The author was a PT boat skipper and is a character in the book - he wrote about his own time in the Filippine Islands during the early years of WWII in the South Pacific.
Very good book and movie!
I also have an original hard cover copy of the book. :salute:

There was a scifi movie, saw it in my early teens, of a modern day battleship (modern for the early 80's) getting caught in a disturbance that sent it back to WW2. It popped up between the Japanese forces that attacked Pearl Harbor and they had to make a decision about whether to let history play out as it should or do their duty and protect United States territory...

...I'm blanking on the name.

War movies are among my favourite genres !
These are the movies I like most about World War II:

- The Great Escape (1963)
- The Dirty Dozen (1967)
- Saving Private Ryan (1998)
- Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

...and a special citation for an italian movie I love much: Mediterraneo (1991)

Ah, yes, those are some great ones in my book too!

Did you know that the movie "The Great Escape" is one of the most authentic re-creations of a WWII story ever made?
There were a few of the actual prisoners who were consultants to the movie producers.
Those prisoners insisted that everything was as it was and how it actually happened, or they wouldn't allow the movie to go forward.

Good Stuff!

A few more great WWII movies ...

"To Hell and Back" Starring Audie Murphy (playing himself) (1955)
Incidentally, Audie Murphy was the most decorated American veteran of World War II.
This film shows Audie Murphy in WWII through Sicily, Italy and France.

Also "Letters from Iwo Jima" (2006)
The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.
Very interesting and well done!

There's another WW2 film (again, I suck at names) starring a young Sylvester Stallone. Largely themed around soccer/futbol, where prisoners in Nazi war camps are trying to escape but at the same play soccer as a sort of recess. Leads the head Nazi of the camp to arrange a game between the prisoners in his camp and a top Nazi soccer team in Berlin.

Movie also stars world famous futbol player Pele.

Yesterday I watched "Patton" (1970), another famous war movie about WWII.
Patton was fanatic and impulsive but he was also a great commander, one of the greatest generals in the history of the 20th century.

I would like to watch again "Where eagles dare" (1968) with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, I haven't been wachting it by long long time.

PS:
the movie Evilgrins talks about is "Victory" (1981) directed by John Huston
