Didn't know where to post this really, so I shall post it here.
I would like to announce that I will shortly be starting the process of making a DeathMatch level for UT99 based on the Doom II level "Downtown". I shall be making two versions of this:
(1) DM-DowntownDoom will be an almost exact replica of the level with no major changes from the original level with simple geometry and lighting
(2) DM-DowntownDoomHD which will be slightly modified to better make use of the geometrical and lighting advantages the Unreal engine brings over the Doom engine and will feature much better embelishments and lighting effects along with minor layout improvements. The higher geometric quality and the usage of better lighting may make the HD version slower, hence I am making both versions so nobody feels left out! I know there are a lot of old PC's out there still running!
Comments and suggestions are welcome and I forsee the level's initiation sometime in the coming week. _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

I'm glad the two-version idea is going down rather nicely . I really intended the HD version to be for people who wanted a UT level and the standard version to be for nostalgic people who love Doom II and want the architecture transferred to the Unreal universe.
Thanks for the comments _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

This would also give people like me an idea of what Doom II was like to play.
I have never played it.
If it was a great level, we can ALWAYS use another great UT99 level to play! _________________ {xCBx}Hook (Site Administrator)

Yes, great idea Deimenreid!
I will surely keep an eye on this topic!
Oh, PS: Hook told me that he is surely planning on starting a Mapping forum right here also!
He will be moving this thread to that soon! _________________ JackO

Thanks JackO! I will be doing some preliminary "reconnaissance" (spelling eludes me there) of the level to get to scale and texturing correct before I start the arduous task of taking measurements of building sizes! As I said before the basic one will just be a Doom II port but I have big plans for the HD version! It will look a LOT more like a city and will capture the urban atmosphere much better.
I will keep this thread up to date with WIP updates. Actual UEd work will start soon after the scouting process, and I foresee the standard version taking very little time to make (I will be dedicating a LOT more time to the HD version) so hold on to your hats!
Game on!
EDIT: Oh, and great news about the upcoming mapping section!
SECOND EDIT: Mapping has now begun! Using both DeePsea (doom editor) and UEd 2.0 to capture the atmosphere! Basic geometry has begun construction! _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

UPDATE: The actual geometry is coming along very nicely! I am half-way, if not further, towards completing the basic layout. Texturing is yet to come, so no screenies yet (unless you like staring at a LOT of the default horrible green Unreal texture )
Will keep you updated. Screenies will come eventually! I shall post them during texturing (with Doom II screenshots of the same area alongside so you can see how it looks in both universes!
Hang tight! _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

UPDATE: Another 3 of the building interiors done. About 4 or 5 remain, so in a few days there should be some screenies as texturing will have begun by the start of the coming week. A few complications but nothing major. _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

Possibly not, since Downtown (if you've played Doom II, you'll probably remember) is a mix of both a large outdoor environment and a series of tight indoor sections with some close, technical fighting. You'll see when I release the standard version. Of course, I will be using input from the release of the standard version to see which direction people would like the level design to go in (since the HD version is going to be a total modification of the original so as to optimise it for the multiplayer style of UT opposed to the singleplayer Doom II style.
I will be opening a poll shortly after release to see what people want included/changed for the HD version aside from the features I intend to implement, so hold tight! Your input matters! _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

UPDATE: Sorry about the lack of updates. Recent university commitments and also relationship issues have caused a small delay in the completion. Mapping will resume soon! _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"

Lol getting there. Good job you reminded me! The last couple of weeks have been chock full of exams and the PC hasn't even been on, let alone editing lol
Now that its the unneccessarily long summer vacation mapping will be resumed this week (maybe even today) so hold on to your hats! This WILL get finished
EDIT: And now my house is (almost) literally falling down. Damn heavy rain and pooly maintained accomodation.... _________________ "For your information, I don't suck pencils!"
