UT99 - THE Elite Game ...
Is UT becoming the Elite Game to play?
Or, should I say, THE Game OF the ELite players of FPS? (First Person Shooters)
Has it always been?
Although there is still a good number of people playing UT99 online and offline, it is quite a bit less than there were in its "HayDay" from 1999 through 2003/2004 or so.
I have still Recently (since March 2008) seen as many as about 3,200+ players playing UT online - this occasion was on the Friday before Easter, 2008.
This isn't always the case but it does show that at least that many are still out there with UT99 on their computers and can and do potentially play UT99 online even still!
Most of the time I see between 300 and 1,200 players online at any given time!
Now it seems to me that the UT99 players that still "regularly" play UT99 online probably mainly fit into 2 categories! ...
1 - The Diehard Veterans who have played for the most part since at least the "Hayday" of UT99 - These are usually pretty skilled at it and many of these have specialized in a game type mod or two.
2 - The NEW Players - People that have just obtained UT99.
Many of these are people in Places like South America, Central America, ASia and Africa or the Middle East.
Also, there are a good amount of younger people who have purchased one of the later UT Anthologies that includes UT99/GOTY along with it.
There is another group of current UT players that I believe are the smallest number.
They are the "Veteran Players" that played years ago in the "Hayday" of UT then quit playing regularly over the years or just recently have come back to play.
I (Hook) myself believe that I fit into this other group, but I have played on & off over ALL of the years but not often enough to keep the skill level I used to have back in the hayday of UT.
I do Fair to Good with regular DM UT and even a bit better with a Zark type rifle.
In MosterHunt, I can Kill Monsters alright but it is the traps and/or the Bunny Tracks that are my downfall.
In Redeemer Arena, I am a medium skilled player who occasionally wins and other times I loose miserably! LOL I am all over the board! LOL
It kind of depends on how tired I am as I usually play between 12 midnight and 3:00 a.m.
Also, I am turning the age corner I am afraid. (I just turned 53)
I used to be able to kick butt fairly regularly, but now I get tired so fast when I play UT.
I am inclined to say that MOST of the UT99/GOTY players that are still playing online fairly regularly fit into the number 1 category above, the Diehard Veterans with quite a bit of skill, even though I have met alot of NEW players playing online.
These skilled "Veterans"(No. 1) are the ones I call THE ELite players of FPS! (First Person Shooters)
And of course they play THE GAME OF the ELite players of FPS - UT99/GOTY!!!
And that is my point! I think LOL _________________ {xCBx}Hook (Site Administrator)

True it's still a popular game but I to have seen a steady decline in play over the years.
And with the entry of new "First Person" games every year it's not looking good for the future.
The only good thing UT99 has going for it is it's simplicity...and I think that keeps a lot of people playing.
That's one of the main reasons I'm still around...I'm lazy and I hate to think much....lol
And if it wasn't for the help of Hermskii I would have been gone long ago.
The current trend I see is with "Veterans" jumping from server to server trying different game mods.
And luckily for Hermskii and I, we offer something a little outside the norm.
As for what the future holds it's tough to say...I'm just happy and fortunate to be part of UT99. _________________

Yea, Actually, I dug out my old UT99 after playing some newer games. I just wanted to try it out to remember what it was like, some nostalgia. But I got addictided , and soon I was playing like I used to: 24/7! _________________ {xCBx}Shadow342 *Moderator*

Like I've said several times before ...
"When I finally get my server going, mine will be the last server for UT99.
And I the last player."
But maybe, I'll play the last game with fellows like you 2 - and Hermskii also!
I still think that it will be quite some time yet before UT99 is near gone! _________________ {xCBx}Hook (Site Administrator)

all of which bring me to my question. Ok heres the scoop, i jsut rebuilt my comp, and I've seen some
forums which mention that some of the newer comps won't play the older games like ut99
due to the newer video cards and the dual core chips. So what do you guys hear about this
and do you think that I can or should try to reinstall it ??
Thanks!!

Friday night
-363 Deathmatch servers online
-330 servers empty
-33 servers active
-119 people playing
Not sure why some people keep there servers up and running?
It's sad enough that I can't play on my own server but if my
server was empty all the time I would just close it down. _________________

Yes, if you play UT often enough evo, you become good at it!
It also depends on which kind of UT you play.
Some are almost unbeatable in say "Redeemer Arena", but when they play DM they may not be able to beat hardly anyone - mainly because they normally do not play DM, or maybe not as much.
What kind of UT do you excel at evo?
What UT game do you do not so good? _________________ JackO

i'm a 125 speed facing worlds player. i only played that because it's what i started on, so i mastered it. now i'm moving into 100 speed deck because there's more skill involved there and the players are more respectful.
i'll suck at anything i try unless i get that spark of desire to be the best. then i put in whatever it takes to reach my goal. i've tried many other maps/mods/speeds and nothing gave me the motivation like face did, and now deck does. _________________ evo

yeah wheres the "rusty" category?
lol havent played in months, cant w8 to get the server back up though
facing worlds huh? and your moving on to deck?
more respectable? than the players on face must really really suck, cause ive played on those all deck servers, those players can be a real pain in the neck.
but i guess you have to choose your servers, as long as you find one that works best for you its all good! _________________ {xCBx}BiGbOsS

on face servers, not only do players constantly insult each other, spam taunts, and throw around cheat accusations, but the admins are such poor losers they ban you if you beat them. can't get much worse than that.
what are the popular east coast us deck servers? the only one i play at right now is TNN. _________________ evo

Hook wrote up about a Bad UT Deck-16 only server.
It may be in the Blog section here in the forum.
It is also in the site part.
Hook's write-up has contributed greatly to the downfall of that particular server!
They, the admins of that server, surely did NOT realize just who they were dealing with! Ha Ha
Hook has a lot of clout and connections in the UT world!
This site is one of the "icons" of UT for over seven years now!
