i picked this game up a few weeks ago at a goodwill store. i was just looking for something fun to pass the time, and haven't really gotten into too many FPS type games since the original wolfenstein. the game is great as a standalone, and just for s&g's i thought i would see if anyone else in the world was still playing this game. i couldn't believe it when i had multiple options for open online games. i started playing, got my @r$e whooped and decided to finish the standalone first before playing online again. i guess 7 years of practice makes folks really good. lol.

as a newbie, i have a few ??'s.

1) can you set this game up to play head-to-head through a home network w/o going through an internet server? i think my son would love to play this with/against me.

2) to do the above (even thorough an internet server) would i have to get another copy of ut99??

3) if #2 is yes, are these easy to find, and does it have to be the same version? the one i have came with 2 disks, one for the game and one for 'extras'.

any help would be appreciated,

thanks,

t

Welcome Thorman :), if you and your son are on the same IP, I believe he can start a LAN game instead of an internet game, which makes it so only you and your son can play. Just install it on both computers, make sure you have the correct version (the 436 patch for each), one of you start a multiplayer game via multiplayer tab, and go to the server tab in the new opened box, scroll down a bit and you should see Optimize for LAN, check that so he can connect, then set everything else to how you want it, (You can leave MOTD lines blank, those are just for messages when you enter a server, same thing with WWW Remote Admin, WWW Password, and WWW Username). You can also add mutators, which add stuff to the game, UT has a ton of downloadable mutators from www.moddb.com. Mutators have new weapons, game types, ect and are player made. Ok so after your done, start the server and go to your other comp, go to Open Location in the multiplayer tab, and type in your IP, and you should be able to connect :). Or you could click on it in the LAN games tab in the Find LAN games browser. I just make maps and play UT though, so I don't know too much about servers lol :).

Hey, WELCOME Here!
You sure found the right place!
How did you find us anyway?
We can help you with anything UT!
Did you know also that you can Make your own Maps? (Playing levels)
Well, first get your game(s) going and later if you wish, look into mapping.

1) can you set this game up to play head-to-head through a home network w/o going through an internet server? i think my son would love to play this with/against me.
YES! :D

2) to do the above (even through an internet server) would i have to get another copy of ut99??
NO! :P

3) if #2 is yes, are these easy to find, and does it have to be the same version? the one i have came with 2 disks, one for the game and one for 'extras'.
Do NOT install the second CD (extras) No time to explain but just don't install the 2nd CD. :?
Just Install it on Both Machines - Patch them both to vers. 436 (no higher!!!)(vers. 451 is just for servers)
With version 436, you do NOT need to have the Game CD to play the game!
:D

Then - Install Bonus Packs 1, 3 & 4 (Available here on our site)
Do NOT install Bonus Pack 2 - you just get file mismatch errors if you do. :(
You can get ALL the Patches and Bonus packs right here on OUR Site!

HERE  Hook's Essential Downloads
Download the 436 patch called UT Windows NO-Delta v436 Patch
This NO-Delta patch works with any UT version!

ALSO: Do NOT Download or install -> Download UT Windows Updated OpenGL Driver
