Multiple UT99 Servers - an Easy and Very Portable way!
OK, so you want to run several UT servers?
A few good tips!
I run a few different gametype UT99 servers and at times I have run a few of them at the same time, as does Hermskii and other admins.
If you are like me, you have limited space on your old hard drive.
(I have only a 15GB hard drive and most of it is used)
I had a few flash drives I used for moving files, etc.
So, just for a test, I copied a server onto a 2GB flash drive creating an "alternate" server and set it up the way I wanted it with a different gametype and settings than the original server.
I also set its base port number to 7737 instead of 7757 as with my regular server.
I also changed its "listen" port to another number - I picked 8878.
My regular server is 8888.
This is so it doesn't interfere with the original server if they run at the same time.
None of the port settings would need to change if you are not going to run more than one server at a time.
Then, I created a Desktop Shortcut as I had with my regular server.
My regular server's shortcup is called: Launch_UT_Server
My new alternate server's shortcup is called: Launch_UT_Server_II
Of course you may call your shortcuts whatever you want to.
The shortcut for my original server "Launch_UT_Server" pointed to where it was on my hard drive.
The shortcut for my new alternate server "Launch_UT_Server_II" pointed to where it was on my 2GB flash drive.
I ran BOTH servers at once and they worked great.
BOTH of them showed up at
www.broadbandgaming.com right next to each other as they are next to each other alphabetically.
My regular server ran accessing the normal hard drive where it resides.
My new alternate server ran accessing the flash drive on which it resides.
If you had say 4 different kinds of servers, you could put each of them on seperate, inexpensive, 1GB or better 2GB flash drives.
Labels them as to which server they are.
Then you could interchange them as you changed your server from one game type to another easily.
You could have several of them plugged in at once and just have shortcuts labelled to the different servers.
Or, you could put all of them on one 8GB flash drive if you wanted to also.
An 8GB flash drive could probably hold up to 9 or 10 smaller UT99 servers on it, but of course it all depends on how much "stuff" like maps and things you have on each server.
Now here is the Portable Beauty of this setup! (as you may have already guessed)
If your server comp goes down, or maybe you just want to move the server(s) to another computer, just unplug the server(s) of your choice and move it/them to another computer (plug it into a USB port) and start up the server again in only a few minutes!
Another scenario is maybe you are going to a LAN party and "the gang" you play with really likes your server.
Just unplug your server of choice and bring it along to the LAN server and plug it in!
WOW - Cool eh?!!!
PS: There is a way to Redirect Maps on a LAN or from another computer on a LAN with a server.
This is a way of "Hosting" you own redirects from your own connection rather than from out on the net.
Redirecting from out on the net usually is the better way to go but this is also not a bad way - depending on your bandwidth.
